unlike the first part of the late professor Schrieke's selected writings, this second volume consist primarily of a single previously unpublished work. that work-a series of detailed studies on various aspects of early Javanese history grouped to gether by the author under the title Vorst an Rujk op oud-Java, or Ruler and realm in early Java- was Schrieke's chief object of study and research during the last years of his life. In 1942 he had hoped to be able to finish the manuscript by the following years, but progress was impeded by any number of obstacles large and small growing out of the wartime situation, and on his death in 1945 the work was not yet completed.
